Reserve Bank of India is the core banking institution of India. The bank was founded in 1935, April by the then British Raj in the country under the recommendation of "Hilton Young Commission". The chief function of RBI is regulating issue of the bank notes (for any denomination), keeping reserves with the aim to secure financial stability in the country and operating the credit and currency systems taking care of the betterment of the country. RBI initially had its central office in Calcutta but since 1937 it's permanently headquartered in Mumbai. The bank was nationalized in 1949. The RBI has 4 regional representations: New Delhi for north, Chennai for South, Kolkata for east and Mumbai for west. These representative offices are monitored by 5 members who are appointed for 4 years.

Besides, RBI has fifteen branches as well as five sub offices in Srinagar, Shimla, Ranchi, Rajpur, Panaji, Kochi, Gangtok, Dehradun and Agartala. Again, the Reserve Bank of India also has twenty-two branch offices located mostly at the state capitals. Apart from these, the bank has 2 training institutions for the officers, one at Pune and the other at Chennai. Then there are 4 zonal training institutes at New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Belapur. The general direction and superintendence of RBI is managed by a group of 20 members from the Central Directory Board, the Governor, 4 Deputy Governors, 1 government officer from Finance Ministry, 10 nominated Directors recommended by the national government. The Reserve Bank of India had 21 governors till date and the running 22nd one is Dr. D. Subbarao.
